SCM Nova TF 110 Spindle Shaper
A shaper earns its place by how many jobs it can take on, and that comes down to two things: how many spindle speeds you can pick from, and how easily you can change the tooling. The Nova TF 110 offers five speeds from 3,000 to 10,000 rpm, letting one machine handle shaping at the low end and routing at the high end, plus an interchangeable MK4 spindle for changing tooling arrangements. The sections below cover the speed range, the spindle, and the fence.
Five Speeds, From Shaping to Routing
The spindle runs at 3,000, 4,500, 6,000, 8,000 or 10,000 rpm. That range matters because tool diameter and rim speed are linked: as a rule of thumb, a large profiling cutter runs at lower rpm, while a small router bit needs higher rpm to cut cleanly. Always follow the tool manufacturer’s rated speed. Broadly, the five steps cover:
- 3,000 to 4,500 rpm for large-profile tooling
- 6,000 rpm for general shaping
- 8,000 to 10,000 rpm for small-diameter cutters and routing work
Tools up to 250 mm (9.8 in) in diameter can be fitted for profiling, and the machine accepts tooling up to 300 mm (11.75 in) when it is lowered under the table at 90 degrees.
The MK4 Interchangeable Spindle
The TF 110 carries a 1 1/4 inch spindle on an MK4 interchangeable mount, with 180 mm (7.1 in) of usable length. The interchangeable mount lets the machine switch between tooling arrangements, including a dedicated router-bit spindle, which SCM offers separately. A countersunk socket screw locks the tool, with no slot.
Aluminum Fence, Not Wood
The shaper fence uses aluminum tables rather than the wooden ones found on lighter machines, and it is adjusted mechanically. Side handles let the operator lift the fence off the worktable and put it back on without tools, making a quick freehand or template job practical.
Power and Build
An 8 HP three-phase motor drives the spindle through an automatic star-delta starter, which brings the machine up to speed without the inrush a direct start would draw. The machine weighs 1,074 lb and takes a 120 mm extraction outlet.
