Laguna Planers
Laguna PX planers cover four cutting widths from 12 to 22 inches, all equipped with QuadTec II indexable insert heads. QuadTec II positions carbide inserts in a straight-line arrangement with four cutting edges per insert. When an edge dulls, you rotate the insert rather than sharpen or replace it, keeping downtime short between cutter changes. The PX|12 runs on 110V for benchtop use; the PX|22 is available in 7.5HP single-phase or 10HP three-phase for production shops.

PX Planer Lineup
The PX|12 is the entry point: a 12-inch machine on 110V, sized for furniture components, cabinet parts, and thicknessing rough lumber in moderate volume.
The PX|16 and PX|20 increase width and motor capacity for shops processing wider stock or running the planer through longer production cycles each day.
The PX|22 is the wide-format option for production shops and millwork operations. It comes in two configurations: the 7.5HP single-phase version for shops running on a standard 240V circuit, and the 10HP three-phase version for facilities running continuous shifts or thicknessing dense hardwoods at volume.
QuadTec II Insert Head
QuadTec II positions carbide inserts in a straight-line arrangement across the cutterhead. This differs from a shear-angle or helical design: inserts sit in a row rather than at an offset, producing a consistent depth of cut and predictable chip load across the full width. Each insert has four cutting edges. When one dulls, loosen it, rotate 90 degrees, and get three more fresh edges before the insert needs replacement. Compared to straight-knife heads, the interval between cutter changes is dramatically longer, and no knife grinder is needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
What planers does Laguna make?
Laguna makes the PX series in four widths: the PX|12, PX|16, PX|20, and PX|22. The PX|22 is available in 7.5HP single-phase and 10HP three-phase configurations. All models use QuadTec II indexable insert heads.
Does the Laguna PX planer have a helical cutter head?
No. QuadTec II uses a straight-line insert arrangement, not a helical pattern. Laguna’s ShearTec II (found on their jointers) uses a shear angle. Both use indexable carbide inserts, but the cutterhead geometry is different: QuadTec II prioritizes consistent depth of cut and four edges per insert for long cutter life.
