The F 520 is the wider of SCM’s two Nova jointers: 520 mm of cut against the F 410’s 410 mm, on a bed that runs nine feet end to end. As with its smaller sibling, the choice is the head. SCM builds it with either the TERSA knife system or the XYLENT spiral cutterblock, and the rest of the machine is the same either way. The sections below cover that choice, then the tables, the fence, and the drive.
TERSA or XYLENT
Both heads measure 120 mm (4.75 in) across and both spin at 5,000 rpm. The difference is in how the edges are carried and renewed.

TERSA is cut from one piece of steel rather than built up from parts, and SCM’s stated reason is stability when the machine is worked hard. Centrifugal force holds the knives in place, so there are no screws to undo and knife changes are quick.
XYLENT puts 84 square inserts into three spiral rows. SCM claims a very good finish, less noise while cutting, and easier extraction because the chips it produces are small. Each insert carries four cutting tips, so a dull edge is turned rather than thrown away, which extends the head’s working life.
Tables and Fence
The tables are ribbed cast iron, and SCM attributes the lack of vibration to their size and construction. Movement runs on connecting rods, which keeps the setting smooth and the tables true over time. The infeed table raises and lowers by hand.

The standard motor is 8 HP (6 kW) three-phase at 60 Hz on a 230 V supply, drawing 24 A, and SCM lists an 11 HP upgrade for this model. Extraction leaves through one 120 mm (4.75 in) outlet.
