SCM Nova F 410 Jointer
A 16-inch jointer with a 102-inch bed will flatten almost anything that comes through a small shop, and the F 410 is SCM’s Nova-line answer at that size. The decision on this machine isn’t the size, but the head: SCM offers it with either the TERSA quick-change knife system or the XYLENT spiral cutterblock, and everything else about the two builds is identical. The sections below explain the difference, then cover the tables, fence, and drive.
TERSA or XYLENT
Both heads are 120 mm (4.75 in) in diameter, and both turn at 5,000 rpm. What changes is how the cutting edges are held and replaced.
| TERSA | XYLENT | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $11,975 | $12,675 |
| Cutting edges | 4 knives | 66 inserts in 3 spiral rows |
| Knife or insert size | 410 × 35 × 3 mm | 15 × 15 × 2.5 mm |
| Edge changes | Knives swap out; no fixing screws | Each insert has 4 tips, rotated as they wear |
| Included | — | 10 spare inserts |
| Crated weight | 1,621 lb | 1,628 lb |
| MPN | NOVAF410_COMP4 | NOVAF410_COMP1 |
The TERSA head is cut from one piece of steel rather than assembled, which SCM credits for staying rigid through hard, repeated cuts. Its knives are clamped by centrifugal force rather than screws, and SCM says changing them is very fast.
The XYLENT head carries three spiral rows of square carbide inserts. SCM claims it delivers an exceptional finish, quieter cutting, and better extraction because the chips it makes are very small. Each insert has four usable tips, so the operator rotates a worn edge rather than replacing it, which extends the head’s life before new cutters are needed.
Tables and Fence
The worktables are ribbed cast iron, and SCM attributes the absence of vibration to their size and construction. Table movement runs on connecting rods, which SCM says hold the setting smoothly and keep the tables true over time. The infeed table is moved by hand, with cutting depth read from a scale.
- Total table length: 2,610 mm (102.75 in) — infeed 1,450 mm, outfeed 1,160 mm
- Working width: 410 mm (16 in)
- Maximum stock removal: 8 mm (0.31 in)
- Fence: aluminum, 1,200 × 190 mm (roughly 47 × 7.5 in)
Motor and Extraction
The standard motor is 8 HP (6 kW) three-phase at 60 Hz, drawing 24 A, and SCM offers an 11 HP upgrade on this model. Extraction leaves through a single 120 mm (4.75 in) outlet.
