SCM Class TF 130 Spindle Shaper
The TF 130 is the fixed-spindle machine at the base of SCM’s Class shaper range, and it also stays open to far more of SCM’s optional equipment than the sibling TF 130PS does. The machine we quote arrives with an 11 HP motor, a fixed MK5 interchangeable spindle and five speeds. From there, though, SCM’s option list stays open in a way it does not on the sibling TF 130PS: a bigger motor, a sectional table, cast-iron extensions and two different tenoning versions are all still available. The sections below cover the spindle unit, the setup readouts, what you can add at order time, and where this machine fits in the range.
The Spindle Unit
The spindle sits in a large column made entirely of cast iron, while a cast-iron “cup” surrounds the spindle itself to keep shavings and sawdust away from the internal mechanical components. Five speeds come standard — 3,000, 4,500, 6,000, 7,000 and 10,000 rpm — which suits any type of machining, from profiling to molding to tenoning, while still allowing large-diameter tools to be fitted. The spindle is fixed rather than tilting, and it takes a 1 1/4 inch MK5 interchangeable unit with 180 mm (7 in) of working length.
- Profiling tools up to 250 mm (9.8 in) in diameter
- Tooling up to 320 x 85 mm (12.6 x 3.3 in) retracts under the worktable
- Spindle base projection of 92 mm (3.56 in) above the table
Setup From the Front of the Machine
Every movement adjusts from a hand wheel with a mechanical decimal readout, positioned on the front of the machine, setting the unit precisely and reliably. In this configuration, the fence uses aluminum tables with mechanical adjustment. SCM also builds a shaper fence with mechanical programming and digital readouts, and for that fence it claims positioning accurate to a tenth of a millimeter with no test run needed; on the TF 130, that fence is an option, but not part of the configuration we quote here.
What You Can Add
Because the TF 130 is the base machine, most of SCM’s optional equipment for the range still fits it. Both the motor and the table can be stepped up, and either tenoning version can be specified at order time:
- 15 HP (11 kW) motor in place of the standard 11 HP
- “Fast” sectional table with manual adjustment — note that fitting it reduces the maximum tool retractable under the table from 320 mm to 300 mm
- “LL” version with two cast-iron profiling extensions
- “TL” and “TL PRO-10” versions for tenoning and profiling, or a carriage on the fixed table for small tenoning operations
- Shaper fence with mechanical programming and digital readouts, or the “Flex” fence
- “T-Set” rapid tool locking, a mobile control panel, a spindle for router bits, and a feeder support device
TF 130, TF 130PS or TI 120?
All three are Class-range shapers of similar size, but they differ in what they are set up to do. The TF 130 pairs a 1,200 x 730 mm fixed worktable with the option list above. The Class TF 130PS instead builds a front sliding carriage, a tenoning table and a tenoning hood as standard equipment, on a different 1,080 x 760 mm table — although in exchange it gives up the 15 HP motor and most of the options listed above. The Class TI 120 tilts 45 degrees either side of vertical, and it carries the largest worktable of the three at 1,200 x 810 mm. So if you profile straight stock and want the widest choice of options at order time, choose the TF 130; if you tenon regularly, choose the PS; and if you need angled work, choose the TI 120.
