SCM Class TF 130PS Spindle Shaper
SCM calls the TF 130PS “the ‘flexible’ par excellence,” and the machine is built around one idea: the front sliding carriage is integrated into the worktable. Alongside it, SCM fits a tilting telescopic fence and a protection hood with a dedicated armguard. Together, those three pieces are what SCM credits for letting an operator carry out tenoning and profiling operations easily and safely. The sections below cover the carriage, the setup readouts, the spindle unit, and how this machine differs from the fixed-table Class TF 130.
Tenoning and Profiling on One Machine
The carriage runs along the front of the table with a squaring stroke of 1,000 mm (39.25 in). SCM does not offer this carriage on the base Class TF 130 in any form; a TF 130 buyer who wants to tenon adds a different device instead, such as the TL version or a carriage on the fixed table. On the TF 130PS, meanwhile, the carriage, the tenoning table and the tenoning hood are all standard equipment. Tool capacity runs to 250 mm (9.8 in) in diameter for profiling tools, and to 300 mm (11.8 in) for tenoning tools.
- Squaring stroke: 1,000 mm (39.25 in)
- Front carriage: 1,080 x 270 mm, sliding on a hardened and ground bar through ball bushings
- Tilting telescopic fence with a protection hood and dedicated armguard
Setup From the Front of the Machine
Every movement adjusts from a hand wheel with a mechanical readout, positioned on the front of the machine. The aluminum fence tables adjust mechanically. SCM also offers a shaper fence with mechanical programming and digital readouts, which it says positions the two worktables to a tenth of a millimeter and removes the need for a test run; that programming fence is an option, however, rather than part of the configuration we quote here.
The Spindle Unit
The spindle sits in a large column made entirely of cast iron, while a cast-iron “cup” surrounds the spindle itself to keep shavings and sawdust away from the internal mechanical components. Five speeds come as standard — 3,000, 4,500, 6,000, 7,000 and 10,000 rpm — which SCM describes as suiting any type of machining, from profiling to molding to tenoning, while still allowing large-diameter tools to be fitted. The spindle is a fixed, non-tilting 1 1/4 inch MK5 interchangeable unit with 180 mm (7 in) of working length. Tooling up to 320 mm (12.6 in) retracts under the worktable at 90°.
TF 130PS or TF 130?
These are not the same shaper with an added carriage. SCM builds the PS on a different worktable: 1,080 x 760 mm, versus 1,200 x 730 mm on the fixed-table Class TF 130. The option lists differ as well. Although the TF 130 can be ordered with a 15 HP (11 kW) motor, the TF 130PS does not offer that motor, so the 11 HP is the only motor SCM builds into this machine. Several other TF 130 options are likewise unavailable on the PS: the “Fast” sectional table, the LL cast-iron extension version, and the TL tenoning carriage versions. If your work is mostly straight profiling and you want the larger fixed table or the bigger motor, then the TF 130 is the better fit. If tenoning is a regular part of the job, the PS arrives ready for it.
