SCM STARTECH CN V Vertical CNC Boring and Grooving Machine
The CN V stands the panel upright instead of laying it flat and needs a correspondingly small footprint: SCM fits the whole machine inside about 5.5 square meters. A numerically controlled clamp takes the panel, positions it under the head, and the head bores vertically, bores horizontally on all four edges, and cuts a groove along X with an integrated blade. The sections below cover the head, the way the machine references a panel, what the control does, and the full specifications.
The Drilling Head
The head carries eight vertical spindles and six horizontal ones — four working on the X axis and two on Y — plus a fixed disc cutter running in the X direction for grooving. Spindles take 10 mm bits and turn at 4,460 rpm; the blade turns at 5,700 rpm and accepts up to 125 mm.
- 8 vertical spindles
- 6 horizontal spindles — 2 + 2 on X, 1 + 1 on Y
- Integrated disc cutter in the X direction, to 125 mm diameter and 6 mm thick
- Horizontal pneumatic drilling stroke of 45 mm on X
On this head SCM makes the device that increases drilling pressure along Z standard, where the smaller F11L head takes it as an option.
How It References the Panel
Head position is referenced from the face of the panel that will be seen. Any variation in panel thickness therefore ends up inside the cabinet rather than on the show face.
Two things help with that. The clamp has a floating opening and requires no adjustment. A sensor reads the panel across X and automatically compensates for a panel that is not the size the program expects.
The table is phenolic and grooved so bits can pass through. The base, table, and gantry are welded tubular steel. Motion runs on prismatic linear guides with ball bearings and recirculating ball screws.
The Control
Programming is done right at the machine on a 10-inch color touchscreen with self-diagnostics. Head tooling and machining cycles are programmed without a mouse or keyboard, and the cycles are optimized automatically. Programs can also be brought in by USB, or generated in external CAD/CAM software.
What Comes With This Build
SCM lists several items as options across the STARTECH CN V range that are included in the machine as configured here:
- Cooling fans in the electrical cabinet
- The panel calibration sensor described above
- Automatic lubrication of the moving parts
- Internal machine lighting
Genuinely optional, and not included: the Maestro CNC programming software, a wireless barcode reader, and a QWERTY keyboard.
