The SI 4K is the machine most shops mean when they say they want to move up to a slider. It brings SCM’s new-generation Nova carriage, an independent powered scoring unit and a 10.5-foot stroke to the entry point of the 4K family. It is the successor to the long-running SI 315es. The sections below cover the two configurations, what the carriage guarantee actually means, and how the 4K compares to the programmable models above it.
Two Configurations: How Much Blade You Need
The SI 4K is sold in two builds, and the difference comes down to blade capacity, which in turn decides how thick you can cut and whether you can run a dado stack:
- 12.4 in (315 mm) blade — cuts 100 mm (3.9 in) at 90 degrees. No dado capability.
- 16 in (400 mm) blade — cuts 136 mm (5.3 in) at 90 degrees, and adds SCM’s DADO SET capability for grooves and rabbets up to 200 mm (7.8 in) diameter and 19 mm (0.69 in) wide.
Everything else is identical: same 5.5 HP main motor, same 10.5-foot carriage, same 50-inch rip capacity, same independent scoring unit. If you cut sheet goods and standard hardwood thicknesses, the 315 does the job. If you want to break down thicker solid stock or cut dados on the same machine, the 400 mm build is the one.
A Carriage Guaranteed for Ten Years
The anodized aluminum carriage rides mechanically fixed, hardened steel guides, with a closed lattice cross-section built for rigidity and minimal flex. SCM guarantees the carriage sliding system for ten years, and it locks at any point along its travel, so it doubles as a solid work surface when you need one. The squaring frame carries a telescopic swinging arm and an idle roller to ease panel loading and unloading.
Scoring and Cut Quality
An independent powered scoring unit runs its own 1 HP motor, with vertical and horizontal adjustments on knobs at the front of the machine. That is what leaves a clean underside on veneered panels instead of the chipped edge a single blade produces. The main blade turns at 4,000 rpm and the scorer at 9,200 rpm, and the blade tilts from 90 to 46 degrees.
Where the 4K Sits in the Range
The 4K is the manual member of the family: blade height, tilt, and rip width are all set by hand. Two machines above it automate that work:
- Nova SI 4K R — adds the READY numerically controlled rip fence, with 99 stored programs
- Nova SI 4K EP — adds powered blade tilt and height as well, three NC axes in total
All three share the same carriage, scoring unit and blade capacity. If your setups are simple and repeat rarely, the 4K is the whole machine you need.
