SCM Class SI 400EP Sliding Table Saw
The SI 400EP is the programmable machine in SCM’s Class range. It pairs the heavy Class frame with the READY 3UP control, so the rip fence, blade tilt and blade height are all positioned numerically rather than by hand, and it turns a 400 mm blade at three selectable speeds. The sections below cover the three programmable axes, the variable blade speed, and how it compares to the manual Class machines.
Three Programmable Axes
The READY 3UP control gives the SI 400EP numerical control over three movements:
- Rip fence — programmed positioning, with the fence able to be excluded from the working area when it is not in use
- Saw unit lifting — blade height set from the panel
- Saw unit tilting — blade angle set from the panel
The control stores up to 99 programs and works in manual, semi-automatic or automatic mode. Enter tool data once, and the control automatically adjusts height for the angle you set, removing the arithmetic from bevel setups. A calculator and hour counter are built in.
Three Blade Speeds
The main blade runs at 3,000, 4,000 or 5,000 rpm. Blade manufacturers tie recommended rim speed to the material being cut, so a shop moving between solid hardwood, sheet goods and plastics can match speed to the job rather than accepting one compromise setting.
Class SI 400EP or Class SI 350
The Class SI 350 shares this machine’s carriage, cast-iron table and 11 HP standard motor, and costs $14,500 less. The differences are blade capacity and automation: the SI 350 takes a 350 mm blade for 118 mm of cut and is set entirely by hand, while the 400EP takes a 400 mm blade for 140 mm of cut and positions three axes from the panel. If you cut thick stock or set up bevels repeatedly, the 400EP is the machine; if not, the SI 350 offers the same build quality for considerably less.
The Class Carriage
The carriage uses closed reticular geometry with steel guides held by SCM’s own mechanical fixing method, and the Class arch-ground steel slideways hold a tolerance of 0.05 mm across the full length of the carriage while carrying four times the load of conventional guides. SCM guarantees the carriage sliding system for ten years.
