SCM L’invincibile S 7 Thicknessing Planer
A thicknesser is judged on two things: the surface it leaves and how much it costs to keep running. Knife changes, downtime, and re-sanding are where a planer quietly gets expensive. The S 7 is built to cut all three, and most of that comes down to the cutterblock and the way stock is fed through it. What “L’invincibile” Means on a Thicknesser
L’invincibile is the name at the top of SCM’s classic range, the one the company built its reputation on back in 1952. On a saw it buys a ten-year carriage; on the S 7 it buys the top thicknesser in that range: a 630 mm bed, a 15 HP motor with a star-delta starter, and a worktable carried on four large screws and two linear guides so it holds position without being locked down.
The XYLENT Cutterblock Changes the Running Cost
A conventional planer head carries a few straight knives across the full width. The optional TERSA head on the S 7 is exactly that, four knives. The XYLENT block that ships on this machine works differently: it carries 84 small carbide inserts arranged in a spiral, and each insert has four cutting tips. When an edge dulls, rotate the insert to one of its three other edges rather than replacing it. So a set of inserts runs far longer between changes than straight knives before anything is bought. The spiral shear also runs noticeably quieter, and because it produces small chips rather than long shavings, the extraction system clears them more easily.
Feeding Mixed Stock in One Pass
The infeed roller is sectioned steel rather than solid, so it rides over boards of slightly different thickness at the same time and still holds each one down. For a shop running batches that are not perfectly uniform, that is the difference between one pass and sorting the pile first. It also lets the machine make a clean minimum cut. All three feed rollers move on connecting rods, which keeps the feed linear and prevents the machine from leaving notches or stop marks on the surface. Feed pressure is pneumatic and can be set differently on the infeed and outfeed rollers, and an idle-roller thicknessing table helps damp or resinous stock keep moving.
The Ready Control
Worktable height is set electronically from the Ready control panel with micrometric adjustment, and the panel monitors the main motor: it trims feed speed on its own when a heavy cut loads the motor, protecting it on a demanding pass. Feed speed runs from 4 to 20 meters a minute, and the cutterblock turns at 4,500 rpm.
