SCM Class M 3 Multi-Blade Gang Rip Saw
The M 3 is the most powerful machine on our SCM lineup, and it does a job none of the others do: it carries a pack of saw blades on one shaft and rips a board into several pieces in a single pass. The North American build runs on 460 V and comes equipped with SCM’s top motor, 60 HP. The sections below cover the blade shaft, the feed, and the guarding, which is the part SCM leads with.
The Blade Shaft
Blades run at 4,200 rpm on a 70 mm sleeve, and the shaft takes a pack up to 300 mm wide using blades from 200 to 350 mm in diameter. Maximum blade count depends on the kerf and spacers you choose for a given job.
SCM’s shaft design has a tapered fit where the sleeve meets the base of the spindle, which keeps blades sharper for longer and lets the saw put more stock through per hour. The configuration we quote also includes an extra shaft sleeve with rings and flanges at 95 mm (roughly 3 3/4 inches), rated for 300 mm blades and stock up to 100 mm thick.
- Blade diameter: 200 to 350 mm
- Max blade pack width: 300 mm
- Blade bore: 70 mm
- Sleeve bore: 50 mm
- Blade speed: 4,200 rpm
- Distance from base to the first right-hand blade: 200 mm
The Feed
Stock travels on a heavy linked belt driven directly through the links themselves. No chain sits in between the links, and SCM credits that arrangement with keeping the feed straight. A separate 2.4 HP motor drives it, and the rate is continuously adjustable from 6 to 48 m/min rather than stepped.
At the infeed, the fence has a lever that locks itself in place and is easy to operate with one hand.
Guarding
This is what SCM leads with on the M 3, and the claim is specific rather than general: the machine carries four anti-kickback finger barriers — three above and one below — with a chip deflector screen between the three upper barriers.
