Laguna Jointers

Laguna jointers run from the 6-inch JX|6 benchtop to the 20-inch J|20 industrial machine, covering shops of every scale. The JX series uses parallelogram table adjustment, so depth changes don’t disturb infeed and outfeed alignment. QuadTec II inserts (straight-line, four cutting edges per tip) come on the JX|6 and JX|8 QuadTec; ShearTec II (shear-angle geometry for reduced tearout) is on the JX|8 ShearTec and JX|12. 360 Degree Machinery carries the full Laguna jointer range.

The Laguna Jointer Lineup

The JX|6 is the entry point: a 6-inch benchtop jointer on a standard 110V circuit with QuadTec II inserts and parallelogram table adjustment. It’s a capable machine for a one-person shop and a significant step up from the straight-knife machines it typically replaces.

The JX|8 comes in two versions. The JX|8 QuadTec runs at 1.75HP on 110V, keeping 8-inch capacity accessible without a 220V circuit. The JX|8 ShearTec steps to 220V at 3HP, pairing higher motor output with shear-angle insert geometry that produces noticeably less tearout on figured hardwood and reversing grain. If you work with figured maple, walnut, or quartersawn material regularly, the ShearTec surface finish is worth the power upgrade.

The JX|12 scales to 12-inch capacity at 5HP on 220V with ShearTec II geometry and parallelogram tables, making it a fit for larger cabinet shops and production millwork operations running wide stock.

At the top of the lineup, the J|16 and J|20 are industrial machines built for continuous use. The J|16 runs a 5HP motor in single-phase or three-phase configurations. The J|20 handles 20-inch stock for dedicated millwork and flooring production.

ShearTec II vs. QuadTec II

QuadTec II positions carbide inserts in a straight-line arrangement. Each insert has four cutting edges: when one dulls, you rotate the insert rather than replace it, keeping downtime and cutter costs low. ShearTec II uses a shear-angle arrangement that reduces cutting force against the grain and produces a smoother surface on difficult material. For shops working primarily with straight-grain lumber, QuadTec is the practical choice. For furniture makers and custom millwork shops dealing with figured stock daily, ShearTec II is worth the step up.

Frequently Asked Questions

What jointers does Laguna make?
Laguna makes the JX series in 6, 8, and 12-inch widths (with QuadTec II or ShearTec II insert heads depending on model) and the J|16 and J|20 industrial machines. All JX models include parallelogram table adjustment.

What is the difference between ShearTec II and QuadTec II jointer heads?
QuadTec II uses straight-line insert placement for four cutting edges per insert and consistent chip loads. ShearTec II uses a shear angle that reduces tearout on figured grain. Both use indexable carbide inserts, but ShearTec II produces a smoother finish on difficult material.
