# SCM Class S 630 24.8 inch Thickness Planer (Xylent or Tersa Head)

## SCM Class S 630 Thickness Planer

Twenty-four and a half inches of width, on 14 HP, with a feed rate you set anywhere between 4 and 20 meters a minute rather than picking from a handful of fixed steps. The Class S 630 is the larger of the two SCM thicknessers we carry, and the sectioned steel infeed roller that costs extra on the smaller Nova S 520 is standard here. As on the smaller machines, the head is the choice to make: TERSA knives or the XYLENT spiral. The sections below cover that choice, the feed, the table, and the full specifications.

### TERSA or XYLENT

Both heads are 120 mm across and turn at 4,500 rpm. What changes is how the cutting edges are held.

| | TERSA | XYLENT |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Cutting edges | 4 knives | 105 inserts in spiral rows |
| Knife or insert size | 640 × 35 × 3 mm | 15 × 15 × 2.5 mm |
| Renewing an edge | Knives clamp by centrifugal force, no screws to undo | Each insert has 4 tips, turned as they dull |
| Also included | — | 10 spare inserts and a torque key |
| Crated weight | 2,366 lb | 2,377 lb |
| MPN | CLASSS630_COMP3 | CLASSS630_COMP1 |

The XYLENT head delivers an exceptional finish with less noise while cutting. Its inserts carry four tips apiece, so a dull edge is turned into place rather than thrown away. The TERSA head provides fast, toolless blade changes.

### The Feed

Three powered rollers move the stock: one sectioned steel roller on the infeed and two rubber-coated steel rollers on the outfeed. All three sit on connecting rods, and SCM says a workpiece neither stalls nor comes out notched, because each roller can rise and fall as the timber passes. SCM also makes the rollers interchangeable, so you can reconfigure the drive when the job is awkward, such as taking a minimum amount off fine timber.

Feed speed is inverter-controlled and continuously variable from 4 to 20 m/min (13 to 66 ft/min), so you can precisely match the rate to the cut instead of rounding to the nearest step. SCM also offers pneumatic load adjustment on the rollers as an option, which varies the pressure on the workpiece at any point during a run.

- **Infeed:** one sectioned steel roller, driven
- **Outfeed:** two rubber-coated steel rollers, driven and field-interchangeable
- **In the table:** two idle bed rollers, separate from the three powered feed rollers

### The Table and Its Lift

Table height is powered, running at two speeds with micrometric adjustment and a digital readout of the setting. Four jack screws with acme-style threads and dust covers carry the table, and SCM notes a patented arrangement that keeps chain pressure off the jack screw itself. Under it all sits a welded monoblock base, normalized and stabilized, with a ribbed cast-iron table machined and polished on top.
